RICHMOND, Va.-- Jackson W. Carroll, a pioneer in the field of
congregational studies, delivered the 1997 Sprunt Lecture Series at Union
Theological Seminary in Virginia, Jan. 27-29. The series, titled "Local
Ecclesiologies: The Church in Post-traditional Society," was given at the
Ginter Park Presbyterian Church and the seminary's Watts Chapel. Carroll
is currently director of the J.M. Ormond Research Center and is the Ruth W.
and A. Morris Williams Jr. professor of religion and society at the Duke
University Divinity School.
SAN ANSELMO, Calif.-- More than 23 of San Francisco Theological Seminary
(SFTS)'s trustees and administrators visited Korea last fall to evaluate
seminary programs, experience firsthand the growth of the church in the
Pacific Rim and deepen and expand the seminary's relationship with the
Presbyterian church. Board chair Lynn Upshaw said, "SFTS has strong ties
with pastors and churches in Korea as well as Korean pastors and churches
living in the United States. Through the SFTS doctor of ministry and MATS
programs, the seminary has built solid relationships with prominent Korean
Christians. We were privileged to respond to this opportunity to deepen
those ties."
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- "Violence in the Community of Faith" is the subject of
the annual Caldwell Lectures, March 3-4, at Louisville Presbyterian
Theological Seminary, to be delivered by Marie Fortune. Forture is the
founder of the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence in
Seattle, Wash., which as been an educational ministry for religious
communities in the United States and Canada. Following the lecture series,
a ReflecTime continuing education program will be held titled "Pastor, Can
You Come?: Sexual and Domestic Violence in the Congregation," led by Nancy
Ramsay and Loren Townsend, members of the seminary's pastoral care faculty.
The ReflecTime runs March 5-6 and the cost is $50.
RICHMOND, Va.-- March 1 is the application deadline for the 1996-97
Presbyterian School of Christian Education (PSCE) Congregation Awards,
formerly known as Vision Awards and administered by PSCE. Now in its sixth
year, the program recognizes Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Churches with
outstanding education and outreach programs. Each award carries a $1,000
gift to expand or enhance the recognized program. Applications are
available from the PSCE Communications Office, 1205 Palmyra Ave., Richmond,
Va. 23227. For more information, call (804) 254-8049. The awards are
presented at the General Assembly.
CHICAGO-- Ten new members were installed on the board of trustees of
McCormick Theological Seminary. They are John L. Anderson, Kathy Sims
Collier, the Rev. Yun Chun Han, the Rev. Donald L. Harris, Elinor Kirkland
Hite, the Rev. Eddie Knox Jr., William R. Lane, Jan Martin, the Rev. Mark
McDonough, Sister Grace Marie Walle and Al Warren.
