UMCOR seeks candidates
for Africa mission trip

     Opportunity awaits a few United Methodists interested in
exploring the plight of uprooted people.
     Lilia Fernandez, executive secretary for refugee ministries,
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), is seeking
candidates from local congregations to participate in an
ecumenical mission study to Africa.
     Sponsored by Church World Service, the National Council of
Churches' (NCC) relief agency, the trip will examine the root
causes of displacement and forced migration. It is tentatively
scheduled for May 9-22 and is limited to three groups of five
people each, which will separately visit West Africa, East Africa
or Southern Africa.
     Participants will meet with church leaders and ecumenical
agencies assisting refugees and displaced persons, visit refugee
camps and talk with United Nations representatives. 
     Applicants should have experience at the congregational level
in some dimension of refugee resettlement, be in good health and
be prepared to share their experience with other congregations and
advocate for the cause of refugees after the trip.
     UMCOR will defray half of the estimated $2,800 cost for
people selected to participate. The application deadline is March
