Requests for free materials indicate
increase in new and recovering churches

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- United Methodists have started
more churches and suffered more disasters than usual in the past
seven months, according to a Cokesbury program that offers new
hymnals, Bibles and church school curriculum resources to newly
organized churches and churches damaged by natural disasters --
earthquakes, floods, tornados or hurricanes.
According to officials, the retail arm of the United
Methodist Publishing House provides new materials to about 50
churches during an average 12-month period. In the last seven
months, however, Cokesbury has provided free start-up materials to
39 new churches and 19 churches that suffered through a major
disaster -- a total of 58 churches. Five months remain in the
agency's fiscal year that ends July 31.
Through the retail sales division, the United Methodist
Publishing House offers start-up quantities of free supplies,
including a year of curriculum resources.
New churches must be certified as new United Methodist
congregations or Sunday schools. Churches recovering from natural
disasters must have their district superintendent submit a written
request for the materials with an explanation of the church's need
to the New Congregation and Sunday School Assistance Office, P.O.
Box 801, Nashville, TN 37202-8831.
