Beneficial Management Corporation of America Grants
$25,000 to Burned Churches Fund
February, 1997
New York - Beneficial Management Corporation of
America (BMCA) has donated $25,000 to the Burned
Churches Fund established by the National Council of
Churches(NCC). The fund, supported by a broad
ecumenical and interfaith community, helps
restoration and rebuilding efforts for houses of
worship desecrated by hate-motivated arson and
vandalism.
BMCA's grant came from the spirited effort of
employees throughout the United States who donated
both their time and resources to collect donations
for the fund.
A growing number of leading companies have
contributed toward the $12 million goal of the
Burned Churches Fund. To date, 79 burned churches
have been voted rebuilding grants and more grants
are being processed.
The Rev. Dr. Albert M. Pennybacker, associate
general secretary for Public Policy for NCC, said,
"The NCC is deeply thankful for the generous concern
shown by Beneficial and its employees. Their
partnership with America's religious communities to
fight against this epidemic of attacks on these or
any houses of worship is an outstanding example of
citizens working for a common cause."
"Beneficial is proud to contribute to the
Burned Churches Fund. This is a most appropriate
way for Beneficial's affiliated companies to
underscore a commitment to developing relationships
in their communities and to sponsor good corporate
citizenship," said David J. Farris, president of
Beneficial Management Corporation of America.
Thus far, the NCC has received more than $10
million in cash and material resources, with 87
percent budgeted for rebuilding and 13 percent for
anti-bias programs and program administration.
Beneficial Management Corporation of America is
a subsidiary of Beneficial Corporation, a $16
billion, New York stock Exchange-listed financial
services holding company. Subsidiaries of the
Company provide financial services through their
various consumer-finance, credit-card, banking and
insurance operations located throughout the United
States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and
Germany.
The National Council of the Churches of Christ
in the USA is an interdenominational, cooperative
body of churches which includes most major
Protestant and Eastern Orthodox denominations in the
United States.
