SAN DIEGO, Calif.--Gathering here at America's sixth largest city, more
than 1,000 participants are preparing for the annual Association of
Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE) conference Feb. 5-8.

Designed for Presbyterians who are involved in the educational
ministry of the church, the event will spotlight issues in ministry with
children, youth, adults, new members and church officers.

Each day of the conference--beginning with opening worship and
communion Feb. 5 and ending with worship at noon Feb. 8 -- the Rev. Howard
Rice and the Rev. Marjorie Thompson will lead participants through worship
and the presentation of the conference theme, "Seeing Through God's Eyes."
The Rev. Doug Adams will be an additional presenter Feb. 6. at the San
Diego Zoo.

A lifelong Presbyterian and educator, Rice is the author of "Reformed
Spirituality: An Introduction for Believers.". His latest book is "Journey
to Wholeness: The Spirituality of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress." Rice,
a former moderator of the General Assembly, is a professor and chaplain at
San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Thompson is a PC(USA) minister and has recently assumed duties as
director of the Pathways Center for Christian Spirituality at the Upper
Room in Nashville, Tenn. For the past 10 years, she has been sought after
as a speaker in the area of spiritual formation. Thompson is also the
author of two books: "Family: The Forming Center," soon to be republished
in a revised and expanded edition and "Soul Feast: An Invitation to the
Christian Spiritual Life."

Adams is professor of Christianity and the arts at Pacific School of
Religion and is on the doctoral faculty of Graduate Theological Union in
Berkeley, Calif. He is the author of six books and editor of 15 books, most
recently "Bringing Biblical Humor to Life: The Life of Jesus' Parables and
Miracles and the Humor of Paul's Letters" and "Eyes to See Wholeness:
Visual Arts Informing Biblical and Theological Studies in Education and
Worship Through the Church Year." He has lectured and led workshops for
more than 600 university and church groups across the country and abroad,
showing how arts inform education and worship.

Being honored as this year's APCE Educator of the Year is Rodger
Nishioka, coordinator of youth and young adult ministries. Nishioka is also
studying full-time at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago for a
Master's Degree in Theological Studies and plans to pursue a Ph.D. in
religious education.

The APCE Local Committee is also working on an off-site afternoon of
workshops and tours Feb. 8 for conference participants who would like to
observe firsthand the ministry of congregations in San Diego.
