ENGLAND: BISHOP OF LIVERPOOL CHAMPIONS JOBLESS

(CT) The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Revd David Sheppard, has said that
Britain is suffering from a Odeep sicknessO about unemployment.

Bishop Sheppard used the official announcement of his retirement to gain
media attention for his views of unemployment. The Bishop was speaking
in
advance of a Church report on unemployment, due out in April, from a
group
which he chairs.

Bishop Sheppard said that there was a deep sickness in the country about
the way people are treated who are out of work. He also accused
politicians of playing down the problem of unemployment in the run-up to
the General Elections. The bishop believes that there is no way that
the
problem can be healed without some sacrifices from "comfortable
Britain".
He believes that taxes ought to rise to improve social conditions.
