United Methodist mission becomes
Russia provisional conference

     The United Methodist Mission in the Commonwealth of
Independent States has gained new status as the Russia Provisional
Annual Conference.
     That designation was approved when delegates of the
denomination's Northern Europe Central Conference met Feb. 26-
March 2 at the new Agape Centre in Parnu, Estonia.
     With provisional conference status, the 10 church
representatives from Russia and the Ukraine will have the same
rights as other delegates within the central conference.
     The Northern Europe Central Conference consists of two
episcopal areas. Bishop Rudiger Minor was re-elected to the
Eurasia Area and Bishop Hans Vaxby re-elected to the former
Northern Europe Area, now to be called the Nordic and Baltic Area.
     Conference delegates also adopted a resolution, "Focus on
1997-2000," which urges every local church to start a new outside
ministry, including "the possibility of planting a new
congregation."
     Another focus is on outreach to young people. "We urge every
annual conference and local church to involve young people and to
update educational programs for youth ministry and contextual
preaching," the conference stated.
