Ecumenical women continue
discussion on Beijing meeting

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- Long after the September 1995 event in
Beijing, women are spreading the word about the Fourth World
Conference on Women.
One mechanism to promote the conference's platform for action
is the U.S. Ecumenical Women's Network: Beijing and Beyond.
Participants include the United Methodist boards of Global
Ministries and Church and Society.
The network offers information and interpretation and
explains how religious concerns intersected with much of the work
of the United Nations conference.
During a March 12 network meeting here, Maria Riley of the
Center for Concern in Washington, reported that an ad hoc group of
nongovernmental organizations (NGOS) is fostering the development
of an NGO network on the Beijing platform.
Riley, who is director of the center's project on "Women
Connecting Beyond Beijing," said much followup has been
accomplished since Beijing, "but it's all disconnected."
The goal is to have five regional gatherings to build
interest in the NGO network's development. The first meeting is
being funded by the Stanley Foundation.
Madeline Albright, the U.S. Secretary of State, is the new
chairwoman of the President's Interagency Council on Women, which
is the governmental entity following up the Beijing meeting.
The council will issue a document soon reporting on how the
government has responded to the platform for action and detailing
a national action plan based on NGO input, according to Riley.
