Fred Denson Elected Chair of GAC
by Bill Lancaster
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The General Assembly Council (GAC) on Feb. 8 elected as
its new chair Fred Denson, an articulate African-American labor attorney
from Webster, New York.
Denson is an elder in the Webster Presbyterian Church and is chair of
the Corporate and Administrative Services Committee of the GAC. He is
married with three grown children -- one an attorney for ABC-TV, one an
administrator for Boston University, and one a social worker and part-time
seminary student.
Denson's name appears in a long list of names attached to a widely
circulated letter endorsing a "Presbyterian Outlook" editorial supporting
Amendment B, the so-called "fidelity and chastity" amendment to the "Book
of Order."
He was elected on the third ballot in a GAC process in which the names
of all eligible members are put on a list, opportunity is given for a
person to remove his or her own name and the remainder are voted on in a
series of ballots until one person receives a majority.
The Council elected Lynda Arden of Clarks Summit, Pa., vice chair on
the first ballot.
They will succeed chair Youngil Cho and vice chair Jinny Miller, whose
terms expire at the end of the 209th General Assembly (1997).
Action on several proposed amendments to the General Assembly Council
Manual of Operations, two of which would have allowed the chair and vice
chair to serve successive one-year terms, was postponed until a later
meeting. A later attempt to set aside the standing rules, which would have
allowed Cho and/or Miller to be reelected, failed.
