     Buechner, Norris Top List of General Assembly Preachers

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Two literary giants -- the Rev. Frederick Buechner and 
Kathleen Norris -- top the list of distinguished Presbyterian preachers who 
will lead worship at the upcoming 209th General Assembly (1997) in 
Syracuse, N.Y., June 14-21. 
 
     The star-studded lineup was announced by General Assembly moderator 
the Rev. John Buchanan to the General Assembly Council at its recent 
meeting here.  Buchanan will preach at the Assembly's opening worship 
service, Sunday, June 15.   
 
     Buechner, who has written countless inspirational books and novels, 
will preach the next day. Norris, author of bestsellers "Dakota" and "A 
Cloister Walk," will preach Thursday, June 19.

     Sunday, June 15:    the Rev. John M. Buchanan, moderator of the 208th 
General Assembly 
 
     Monday, June 16:    the Rev. C. Frederick Buechner, Pawlet, Vt. 
 
     Tuesday, June 17:   the Rev. Linda C. Loving, pastor, First 
Presbyterian Church, Oakland, 
                         Calif. -- former associate pastor to Buchanan at 
Fourth Church,                 Chicago 
 
     Wednesday, June 18: the Rev. James Costen, Atlanta, Ga. -- former 
moderator of the General 
                         Assembly and recently retired president of the 
Interdenominational                   Theological Center in Atlanta 
 
     Thursday, June 19:  Kathleen Norris, a member of Spencer Memorial 
Presbyterian Church, 
                         Lemmon, S.D., and a frequent lay preacher 
 
     Friday, June 20:    the Rev. Eriberto Soto, a Brazilian who is 
coordinator for South 
                         America in the Worldwide Ministries Division in 
Louisville 
 
     Saturday, June 21:  the Rev. Joanna Adams, pastor, Trinity 
Presbyterian Church, Atlanta
