Remaining missionaries
evacuate from Zaire
by United Methodist News Service
All remaining United Methodist missionaries have been
evacuated from Zaire, following the fall of Kisangani, that
African nation's third largest city.
The missionaries have relocated in Ndola, Zambia,
temporarily, according to officials of the denomination's Board of
Global Ministries. They will meet with Curtis Grund and Richard
Williams of the board's mission personnel area, who are expected
to arrive in Zambia on March 23.
Other board personnel assigned to Zaire had left earlier.
A rebel faction led by Laurent Kabila took control of
Kisangani on March 15, leaving him in control of 30 percent of
Zaire.
The evacuation took place at the request of African church
leaders, concerned about the Kabila's intent to continue on to
Lubumbashi in southern Zaire. In a March 21 article, the New York
Times reported that the fall of Lubumbashi was expected at any
time.
