UMCOR warehouse assists
W. Va. flood victims
by Bob Blair*
MILTON, W. Va. (UMNS) -- The Rev. Ed Hood has been operating
a United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) warehouse here in a
former Rite Aid store since the area was deluged by flood waters.
Hood, a United Methodist pastor from Huntington, is
attempting to provide necessary items for people affected by the
flood so that they can start rebuilding their lives.
Simultaneously, he must replenish the warehouse's rapidly-
dwindling supplies.
"It will take a couple of months to meet the needs of
everyone," he said in mid-March. "Right now, we need large
quantities of cleaning supplies, brooms, mops, shovels,
disinfectants ... to give to the victims and hundreds of
volunteers."
College students devoting their spring break to helping
people clean mud from their homes also need cleaning materials, he
added.
"In the weeks to come, we will need furniture, large
appliances, building materials, tools and plenty of nonperishable
food," Hood said.
He pointed to a dozen containers of milk -- the only remnants
of a full semi-truckload donated from Michigan -- then displayed a
shipment of new men's blazers, part of a $200,000 donation from
Corbin, Ltd. In his hand was a $5,000 check from the national
financial services firm of Edward Jones.
Hood said he needs donations of just about anything but used
clothing. "Donations like these are wonderful, but because the
demand and need is so great, it all goes out as fast as it comes
in," he said. "We need a constant flow of donations from
individuals and churches, as well as businesses."
Information on how to donate money or supplies to assist
victims of the seven states spring storms is available by calling
UMCOR at (800) 814-8765. Checks can be mailed to UMCOR at 475
Riverside Dr., Room 330, New York, NY 10115.
