New Bible study resource
on homosexuality available

     A new resource, Claiming the Promise: An Ecumenical Welcoming
Bible Study Resource on Homosexuality has been published by the
United Methodist-related Reconciling Congregation Program, in
cooperation with 10 other ecumenical partners.
     Written by Mary Jo Osterman, a United Methodist Christian
educator and editor of Open Hands magazine, the resource condenses
modern biblical scholarship into a study book accessible to lay
people. The 48-page, seven-session study book is supplemented by a
60-page leader's guide.
     The curriculum was reviewed by 15 respected scholars in
Bible, theology and ethics and tested in 25 churches, according to
Mark Bowman, publisher. United Methodists among the consulting
scholars were Bishop Roy Sano, the Rev. Victor Paul Furnish, the
Rev. Theodore Jennings and the Rev. John Gooch.
     Major grants to fund the $25,000 publication cost came from
the United Methodist Northern Illinois Conference, United Church
in Oak Park, Ill., and Riverside Church in New York. Several
United Methodist reconciling congregations also provided financial
support, according to Bowman.
