Bishop calls for
harmony in Jerusalem

                 by United Methodist News Service

A United Methodist bishop who recently returned from a visit
to Israel has called building a new Jewish settlement outside
Jerusalem "a deliberate provocation of age-old problems of access
to key religious sites in the Holy Land."
In a statement released April 3, Bishop Ann B. Sherer of the
Missouri area declared that Jews, Arabs and Christians to work
together to share Jerusalem.
To find a solution, she said, "Jewish leaders must be
faithful to prior peace agreements and willing to share
Jerusalem."
Sherer -- who visited the site of the disputed settlement and
a Palestinian refugee camp, as well as United Methodist-supported
projects in the Holy Land -- noted that the "need for Israelis to
feel safe in their own homes is obvious. But the plight of the
Palestinians also needs to be recognized and their state
supported."
