CHICAGO - (ACP) April 22, 1997 - The Associated Church Press at its annual
meeting honored publications for outstanding journalistic coverage during
1996. The organization also elected officers for the coming year.
Winners of the "Best in Class" awards in six major publication areas are:
* Regional Newspaper: The Catholic Sun, published in Phoenix, Arizona
* National or Regional Newspaper: Anglican Journal, Toronto, Canada
* Denominational General-Interest Magazine: Presbyterians Today,
Louisville, Kentucky
* General Interest Magazine, Not Denominational: The Other Side,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
* Special Interest Magazine: Reformed Worship, Grand Rapids, Michigan
* Newsletter: Presbyterian Life and Times, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Here is a sampling of other top awards:
Topic of the Year: Race: Sojourners, published in Washington, D.C., for
"Can we Talk?" by various authors
In-Depth Coverage: Christian Century in Chicago for "In Bosnia: by Paul
Mojzes, Peter Kuzmic, James Turner Johnson, and Donald Ottenhoff.
Best Redesign: Adventist Review in Silver Spring, Maryland
Best Graphics: Among Magazines: Liberty Magazine in Silver Spring, MD for
single-issue graphics:
Among Newsletters/Newspapers, Episcopal Life in New York City for
"Spirituality" spread.
U.S. Catholic in Chicago garnered 14 awards, and the Christian Century,
also in Chicago, took 9. The United Church Observer, published in Toronto,
and Sojourners, in Washington, D.C. both won 8 awards.
Awards were made in 39 different areas of content, design, and
illustration. Winning entries were selected from over 1,000 submissions.
Other convention highlights included a keynote address by Sen. Paul Simon
and workshops on electronic media, publication design, digital printing,
effective publication marketing, and freelancing (new markets, approaches,
and services). There was a special focus on religious coverage of urban
issues.
