DECATUR, Ga.-- "Religion and Public Education" will be offered by the Lay 
Institute of Faith and Life from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the 
Harrington Center on the Columbia Theological Seminary campus.  According 
to Timothy Fulop, Columbia assistant dean, the workshop is designed to look 
at key court cases dealing with religion and schools and provide time to 
discuss the questions and uncertainties of parents, teachers, 
administrators and students about students saying blessings in the 
cafeteria, whether student religious organizations may meet on public 
school property and whether history teachers may discuss the role of 
religion in shaping U.S. government.  The cost is $35 at the door, $30 in 
advance, and it includes lunch.  To register, call (404) 687-4577. 
 
DUBUQUE, Iowa--Bradley Longfield was installed as associate professor of 
church history at the University of  Dubuque Theological Seminary on April 
10.  Longfield's address was "Presbyterian Identity:  Where Do We Go from 
Here?"  Longfield was appointed to Dubuque's seminary faculty in 1992; he 
also taught at Duke Divinity School for eight years. 
 
ATLANTA-- Katie Geneva Cannon has been named "1997 Distinguished Alumna" by 
the board of trustees of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary.  Cannon is 
associate professor of religion at Temple University in Philadelphia, a 
position she has held since 1992.  She received the master of divinity 
degree from Johnson C. Smith in 1974 and obtained the master of philosophy 
and the doctor of philosophy degrees from Union Theological Seminary in New 
York City. 
 
RICHMOND, Va.--A weekend celebration honoring the careers of Elizabeth 
Achtemeier, adjunct professor emerita of Bible and homiletics, and Paul 
Achtemeier, Herbert Worth and Annie H. Jackson professor of biblical 
interpretation, is slated May 9-10 on the campus of Union Theological 
Seminary in Virginia.  Elizabeth Achtemeier retired in December 1996 and 
Paul, her husband, will retire in June 1997.  They served Union Seminary 
for 24 years.  A retirement reception will held May 9 in the seminary's 
Belk Center.  A memory book of written testimonials and thanks to the 
Achtemeiers is now being compiled in the dean of the faculty's office.  The 
seminary is also encouraging attendees to bring homemade baked goods and a 
recipe to give to the Achtemeiers.  A series of free lectures will be held 
May 10. 
 
SAN ANSELMO, Calif.-- "Invoking the Holy Spirit in Our Lives Today" is the 
title of the address to be delivered by the Rev. Howard Rice in Stewart 
Chapel on the campus of San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) at 10 
a.m. Saturday, May 3.  The lecture is part of a two-day celebration 
honoring Rice's 29 years of service as SFTS's chaplain and professor of 
ministry.  Rice will continue to participate in the seminary's program on 
Christian spirituality.  Respondents to the lecture are the Rev.  Ophelia 
Manney of Richmond, Calif., and the Rev. Raphael Sanchez of Sebastian, Fla.
