"Presbyterians Today" Judged Best Church Magazine;
Synod of Lakes And Prairies Also Wins Top Honors
by Jerry L. Van Marter
CHICAGO--"Presbyterians Today" has been honored as the best denominational
magazine in North America by the Associated Church Press (ACP), a
consortium of nearly 200 religious publishers in the United States and
Canada.
At a banquet here April 22 announcing its 1996 journalism prizes, ACP
also awarded a "Best of Class" in the newsletter category to "Presbyterian
Life & Times," the newsletter of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies.
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)-related publications won a spate of
awards at the annual competition -- judged this year by faculty from
Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and by several
nationally known reporters, such as Laurie Goodstein of the "Washington
Post" -- with "Church & Society" magazine leading the way with eight
awards. Other PC(USA) winners included "HORIZONS" magazine, the
Presbyterian News Service and "Monday Morning" magazine.
"Presbyterians Today," the judges said, "stands up well against any
magazine anywhere." The magazine also won an award of excellence (first
place) for the "Spotlight" section of the magazine, an award of merit
(second place) for associate editor Eva Stimson's interview with "Dakota"
author Kathleen Norris in the September 1996 issue, an honorable mention
(third place) for its in-depth coverage of "The Homosexuality Dialogue" in
its May 1996 issue and an honorable mention for its preview of the 1996
General Assembly in the June 1996 issue.
In addition to its "Best of Class" award -- the judges said, "Here's
another publication that says Read me!'" -- "Presbyterian Life & Times"
won second place for the graphic design of "Lessons from Mill Stream" in
the December 1996 issue.
"Church & Society" magazine won first place awards for its coverage of
the Beijing women's conference (May/June 1996), for its theme issue "For
the Beauty of the Earth: Restoring Creation for Ecology and Justice"
(July/August 1996), for the poem "Humpback" by Murielle Minard in the
July/August 1996 issue and for Elsa Tamez' biblical reflection on
Ecclesiastes in the March/April 1996 issue; second place awards for "Best
of Class" in the special-interest magazine category and for Eileen
Lindner's theological reflection "Jubilee: Theological Reflections on the
Theme"; and third place awards for its statement of purpose and for Belle
Miller McMaster's book review section in the March/April 1996 issue.
"HORIZONS" magazine won first place in the Bible study category for
Sara Covin Juengst's study of Matthew -- the 1996 "HORIZONS" Bible study --
and third place for K.M. Adam's biblical interpretation "Follow the
Shepherd Home" in the November/December 1996 issue.
The Presbyterian News Service won first place for the 1996 wrap-up
edition of "The General Assembly News," edited by Jane Mead, and third
