              Voting on Amendments Nears Completion

                      by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--With just a baker's dozen presbyteries still to register
their votes, the approval of Amendment B -- the commonly called "fidelity
and chastity" amendment -- and the defeat of Amendment C -- implementing
Presbyterian participation in the "covenanting" agreements of the
Consultation on Church Union -- are both decisive.

As of April 15, the official tally on Amendment B is 90 presbyteries
in favor and 69 presbyteries opposed. On Amendment C, the vote is 61
presbyteries in favor, 90 presbyteries opposed and two presbyteries voting
to take "no action."

The other key amendments, granting commissioned lay pastors greatly
expanded rights and responsibilities, have passed overwhelmingly (see
