o  Dorothy M. Kirkwood, a former missionary and staff
member of American Baptist Churches USA, died May 2 in
Penney Farms, Fla.  She was 80.  She and her husband,
Dean, served as American Baptist International Ministries
missionaries in China from 1946-1949 and then in The
Philippines.  The Kirkwoods returned to the U.S. when
Dean was appointed western representative for the
American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in 1953.  When
the West Coast office closed in 1971 both joined the
American Baptist Churches staff in Valley Forge, Pa. 
Dorothy worked in American Baptist Educational Ministries
and later as a proofreader for the Valley Forge
Manufacturing Company.  Dorothy and Dean Kirkwood retired
in 1985 and moved to Penney Farms, Fla., where she was
active in community and volunteer work.  A memorial
service for Dorothy Kirkwood is scheduled for May 10 at
Penney Farms.  Condolences for Dean Kirkwood and the
Kirkwood family may be sent to him at 
Penney Farms, P.O. Box 247, Penney Farms, FL 32079. 
Memorial contributions may be made to the Penney Farms
Retirement Center, P.O. Box 555, Penney Farms, FL 32079.

o  Dr. James M. Washington, a well-known academician and
theologian whose teaching influenced many American
Baptists, died May 3 following a stroke.  A longtime
faculty member at Union Theological Seminary in New York
City, Washington served there as professor of Church
History.  He had been a speaker and participant at
numerous American Baptist gatherings over the years. 
Condolences may be sent to his wife, Patricia Washington,
in care of Union Theological Seminary, 3041 Broadway at
Reinhold Niebuhr Place, New York, NY 10027.  In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to The Riverside
Church/James Melvin Washington Memorial Fund.

o  American Baptist-related William Jewell College,
Liberty, Mo., has received an anonymous $1.5-million gift
to endow the William Jewell College Midwest Service
Learning Center for Women.  The funding especially will
support organizations dealing with women's concerns such
as spousal abuse, day care provisions, employment and
education.  The college also has announced the
appointment of Dr. Nina T. Pollard, a school
administrator from Marion, Ala., as provost and vice
president for academic affairs.
