Book about Methodism's founder
translated into Russian language

     To help the new but growing United Methodist Church in Russia 
understand its religious heritage, a book about the church's
founder has been translated into Russian.
     John Wesley's Message Today, written by the Rev. Lovett
Weems, president of United Methodist-related Saint Paul School of
Theology in Kansas City, Mo., has been published by Russian
Resources Press, Inc.
     The book was written for laity as an introduction to Wesley's
understanding of the Christian faith, Weems said. It covers the
key doctrines on which Wesley focused his preaching and teaching.
     According to Rosalyn Lewis, rights and permissions manager
for the United Methodist Publishing House, Weems' book, published
originally in 1990, is one of the first Abingdon books to be
translated into Russian.
     Weems said his book was chosen because nothing related to
Wesley had been translated into Russian since some of Wesley's
sermons were published early in the century. 
     "The response of the Russian people to the Wesleyan message
bears witness to that message's enduring power across centuries
and cultures," he said. "The spirit of John Wesley is indeed
alive."
     The project began several years ago in a study group of a
newly-formed United Methodist congregation in Ulyanousk. Under the
guidance of the Rev. Brian Kent, a missionary pastor, the
congregation began to study Weems' book. The initial translation
was done by Laura Arefieva, a medical student who attends the
church.
