Aspiring attorney to interpret Black
College Fund at annual conference sessions
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- A college student who has had a
desire to be a entertainment lawyer since the second grade will
travel across the country this summer promoting the churchwide
fund that is allowing her to achieve her dream.
Monica Rolfe, a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church,
Wichita, Kans., will spend time in four annual conference settings
crediting the United Methodist Black College Fund for making
possible her education at Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta.
Clark Atlanta is one of the 11 historically black colleges related
to the United Methodist Church,
Rolfe is one of six students, who will intinerate in
approximately 33 annual conference settings this summer promoting
the fund that supports the church's black colleges.
The students, all members of United Methodist congregations
and attending a historically black institution, will travel across
the United States as 1997 Lina McCord Interns to raise awareness
of the Black College Fund and the role of black colleges and
universities in education and the church. Joining the interns are
six former interns who will serve as "ambassadors," traveling and
promoting the Black College Fund on short-term assignments.
In addition to annual conference appearances, the students
will address youth rallies, local churches, and United Methodist
women's and men's groups to interpret the fund and personally
thank people for paying their apportionments.
Entering its 25th year, the Black College Fund is supported
by local church apportionments. The internship program, named in
honor of former fund executive Lina H. McCord, promotes the fund
that supports the 11 colleges.
Rolfe will travel to the North Indiana, West Ohio, East Ohio
and North Carolina annual conferences to tell her story and
interpret the ways the fund contributes to the success and
vitality of historically black institutions.
Other 1997 interns are Cicely Barnes, a nursing major at
Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Fla.; Raschanda Hall, a
junior at Dillard University, New Orleans; Joseph Jones, a
political science major at Philander Smith College, Little Rock,
Ark.; Justin Roberts, a sophomore at Dillard; and Tia Woods, an
honor student at Paine College, Augusta, Ga.
The six ambassadors are: Richard Abrams, an education major
at Paine College; Brandon Brown, a junior at Paine College; April
Jones, a senior music education major at Wiley College, Marshall,
Texas; Gabrielle Mallory, a sophomore at Bennett College,
Greensboro, N.C.; GiShawn Mance, a junior at Bethune-Cookman
College; and Kevin Wilson, a junior at Bethune-Cookman College.
