Annual history award goes to student for research
on Methodist missionaries, Native American people

     Holly Folk, a religion historian in New York, has been
awarded the 1997 Racial/Ethnic History Research Award by the
United Methodist Commission on Archives and History.
     The $2,000 award will enable her to continue research on
"Methodist Missionaries of the Anishnaabe: Selves-Determined or
Self-Determining?" The Anishnaabe, a Native American culture of
more than one tribe, is found in the Great Lakes area of the
United States and Canada.
     This award is given annually by the commission for research
in Hispanic, Asian-, African- or Native American history research
related to United Methodist tradition.
     Folk, a graduate of Wesleyan University and Columbia
University, will begin work on a Ph.D. in American religious
history at Indiana University this fall. Since completing her
master's degree last fall, she has been a research assistant on an
encyclopedia of evangelicals. 
     She is a native of Kensington, Conn.
