Churches sponsor Dayton event aimed at banning
landmines

EDITORS AND PRODUCERS: Members of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of
Christ will join the International Campaign to Ban
Landmines at a rally, caravan and worship service in
Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday, June 15, from 3 to 6 p.m.
The Rev. Richard L. Hamm, Disciples general minister
and president, and the Rev. Paul H. Sherry, United
Church of Christ president, will participate in the
three-hour gathering.

The event, "Take Steps for a Safer World," will
begin with a 45-minute rally at Northwest Christian
Church, 5350 Denlinger, Dayton. The rally will gather
participants from as far as Indianapolis and Cleveland
carrying petitions calling for an international ban on
the use, production, trade and stockpiling of
landmines.

Immediately following, a caravan of cars will
travel 1.5 miles to Mt. Olive United Church of Christ,
5501 Olive Road, Trotwood, Ohio, where participants
will visit six display "stations" in a silent walk of
solidarity on the grounds of Mt. Olive. The exhibit
is designed as an educational experience and will
include photographs of landmine victims.

Hamm and Sherry will then conduct worship at Mt.
Olive, beginning at 5 p.m.

The day's events are planned as a unique
opportunity for families to celebrate Father's Day and
to join the 2.6 million people worldwide who have
voiced their support of a global ban on landmines.
