The Rev. David C. Meekhof has been elected president of Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.)-related Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska, the
oldest educational institution in the state. He takes up his presidential
duties July 1, succeeding Kenneth Cameron, who earlier had announced his
resignation effective June 30.
Meekhof previously was interim executive for the Synod of
Alaska-Northwest. Prior to that he was executive for the Presbytery of the
Pacific for 14 years. Upon his election, Meekhof said, "Sheldon Jackson
College was created to serve the needs of Native Americans. The school has
grown in clarity and wideness of its vision. With strong faculty, students
and alumni, Sheldon Jackson College is committed to serve the people of
Alaska and beyond."

The Rev. Syngman Rhee, associate director of the Worldwide Ministries
Division, will be one of seven Asian Americans honored with the 1997
"Bridge Builder" Asian-American Leadership Awards.
The awards, given by "A. Magazine," the largest Asian-American
publication in the United States, are presented each year to individuals
who have inspired Asian-American youth through their leadership and
example.
The recipients are Dr. Bala Ambati, the world's youngest medical
doctor; professional tennis player Michael Chang; Loida Lewis, CEO of
Beatrice TLC International; U.S. Representative Robert Matsui; actor and
activist George Takei; and Olympic gold medal figure skater Kristi
Yamaguchi.
