Detroit congregation to award
56 college scholarships, grants

                 by United Methodist News Service

     Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Detroit will award
scholarships and grants totaling $51,500 to 56 area students
during Sunday morning worship services June 8.
     Forty-eight United Methodist students who show exceptional
promise of leadership will receive a total of $43,500 from the
church's scholarship fund established during its centennial
celebration in 1985.  United Methodist Women of the church will
give an additional eight $1,000 scholarships.
     Thirty-nine Centennial Scholarships of $1,000 and nine grants
of $500 will be awarded for the 1997-98 academic year.  More than
$250,000 in scholarships and grants has been awarded since 1987.
     Forty students will be named William K. Quick Centennial
Scholars in honor of the senior pastor who has served Metropolitan
since 1974.
