Maxine Clarke Beach joins staff
of General Council on Ministries
by United Methodist News Service
Maxine Clarke Beach has been elected to the staff of the
United Methodist General Council on Ministries, the denomination's
program coordinating agency in Dayton, Ohio, effective July 1.
Announcing the election June 2 was the council's president,
Bishop J. Woodrow Hearn of Houston, and the agency's top staff
executive C. David Lundquist.
Beach, is currently academic dean and vice president of
academic affairs at United Methodist-related United Theological
Seminary in Dayton. At the General Council, she will be an
associate general secretary.
Before going to United in 1993, Beach was executive director
of Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, Tenn. She is widely
known across the church, having served as a missionary in Kenya,
taught in summer schools of Christian mission and other churchwide
events, and authored numerous books and articles.
She earned her undergraduate degree at Scarritt College in
Nashville, her M.T.S. degree from Harvard Divinity School in
Cambridge, Mass., and her Ph.D. degree from Boston University.
Her husband, David W. Beach, is a clergy member of the
West Ohio Annual Conference and is currently serving as pastor of
St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Dayton. The Beaches have
three adult children.
Governing members of the General Council elected Beach
following a search process that began in February when the Rev.
Mearle Griffith, associate general secretary, was appointed senior
pastor of North Broadway United Methodist Church in Columbus,
Ohio.
