Denominationwide baptism study guide
published by Discipleship Resources

                by United Methodist News Service

Nashville, Tenn. -- A guide to help United Methodists in
their study of baptism has been released by Discipleship
Resources.
By Water and the Spirit: A United Methodist Understanding of
Baptism will help people make connections between the official
United Methodist interpretative document on baptism and the
fundamental issues of Christian identity and ministry.
Written by the Rev. Gayle C. Felton, the guide contains a
six-session study and the full text of the baptism document By
Water and the Spirit: A United Methodist Understanding of
Baptism, approved by the 1996 General Conference. The statement
interprets baptism in relation to God's grace in Christ and
examines the vocation, life of love and service that result from
responding to the call of faith.
Felton explores the roots of United Methodist beliefs about
baptism and provides some historical background.
An appendix provides charts on historical divisions in the
Christian Church and the formation of the United Methodist
Church. The Baptismal Covenant I, Disciplinary items related to
baptism and helpful resources are also included.
Felton, an assistant professor of Christian nurture at Duke
Divinity School and a clergy member of the North Carolina Annual
Conference, was a member of the Baptismal Study Committee. She is
also the author of The Gift of Water (Abingdon, 1992).
By Water and the Spirit: Making Connections for Identity and
Ministry is a companion piece to the General Conference document
and is available from Discipleship Resources for $11.95.
