Professor of theology receives
1997-98 graduate scholarship

     NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- The Rev. Imani-Shiela Newsome-
McLaughlin, a faculty member at Boston University School of
Theology, is the 1997-98 Esther E. Edwards Graduate Scholarship
recipient.
     The $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a female
administrator or faculty member pursuing an advanced degree that
will provide the basis for a leadership role at a United
Methodist-related college or university. 
     Newsome-McLaughlin is assistant dean of student affairs and
assistant professor of practical theology at school of theology.
She is completing a doctoral degree in higher education
administration at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
     Ordained an elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church
in 1988, she transferred into the New England Annual Conference of
the United Methodist Church in 1992. She has developed curricula
in education on both undergraduate and graduate levels and has
developed courses in spiritual formation, preaching and womanist
theology. 
     Newsome-McLaughlin will receive the scholarship during the
annual Institute of Higher Education sponsored by the General
Board of Higher Education and Ministry's Division of Higher
Education, June 25-27, in Nashville.
