OFFCENTER AT THE ONCENTER
SYRACUSE--Trying to count votes in the Ecumenical Relations Committee
Monday afternoon, committee assistant Garnett Foster, clearly exasperated
(and believe me, Offcenter knows exasperated), told timid committee
members: "Some of you are bad hand-raisers -- you never would have gotten
to the bathroom in elementary school!"

Overheard at the information booth in the Exhibit Hall late Monday,
uttered by an overworked volunteer (and believe me, Offcenter knows about
overworked): "By Friday we will have all the answers to questions that will
never be asked of us again."

Who says Presbyterians don't know a good fight when they see one? The
marquis on the Harrison Street side of the War Memorial "Welcomes the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)" while the Montgomery Street entrance
advertises "World Class Boxing -- Return to Glory."

In the Assembly Committee on the Office of the General Assembly meeting
Monday evening, YAD Travis Claver of Great Rivers Presbytery rose in
support of an invitation from Philadelphia Presbytery to host the 2006
General Assembly (the 300th) with the ringing endorsement: "I think we
ought to do it -- a 300th anniversary doesn't happen every day!"

Small world, close family dept., part II: Bill Williamson Jr. (Middle
Tennessee Presbytery) and his sister, Sissy Almand (Flint River
Presbytery), are both commissioners to the 209th. Not only that (and
Offcenter thinks that is enough all by itself), every member of their
immediate family has now been a General Assembly commish: father Bill Sr.
(Concord Presbytery), mother Virginia (Concord, also) and brother Charles
(Charlotte Presbytery).
