SYRACUSE--The Binds that Tie: Observing the brouhahas, conundrums and
assorted contentions of the 209th, veteran Assembly-watcher Vic Jameson
observed: "It's like a mouthful of too-hot coffee -- the next thing you do
is going to be wrong!"

Broadway Bound: Friday morning Offcenter spotted one of the Assembly TV
camera operators sporting a black tee-shirt which on the back said "All
this over a loaf of bread." Way cool, thought Offcenter, a new G.A. tee
shirt -- I want one of those. Then the camera operator turned around and
the front said, "Les Miserables." It's still a good G.A. tee-shirt, and
Offcenter still wants one.

Dave Brubeck, the legendary jazz great who performed for the Assembly
Tuesday night, arrived in Syracuse with a severe ear infection. He was
rushed to a hospital for relief so the show could go on. At the end of the
treatment, Brubeck asked, "How much do I owe you?" The doctor, not
recognizing the unassuming Brubeck, replied, "Forget it." Brubeck then
reached into his pocket, pulled out one of his CDs, autographed it and
handed it to the doc. As he walked out, she stood there, mouth agape. A
wonderful grace note of the 209th.

Offcenter is bitterly disappointed with the Assembly's decision Friday
to change National Office of Finance and Technology (NOFAT) to Technology
and Finance Office (TAFO). NOFAT was the brainchild of its new
chairperson, Hugh Burroughs of Berkeley, Calif., who, amazingly, seems to
have a better sense of humor than the majority of 209ers (Offcenter finds
that revelation stunning). When a commish asked on the floor, "Do we want
people laughing every time a member of that office gets up to speak?"
Offcenter shouted, loud enough to be heard by numerous bystanders, "YES!"

As the 209th winds down, Offcenter especially thanks co-conspirator
Houston Hodges for helping to create this little bit of whimsy. PLEASE,
209ers, subscribe to "Monday Morning" -- Houston needs the work!
