YADs Plant Tree
by Nancy Rodman
SYRACUSE--Led by co-moderators Andrew Buckley, Presbytery of Monmouth, and
Jennifer Rund, Presbytery of Southeastern Illinois, the Youth Advisory
Delegates (YADs) to the 209th General Assembly planted a tree as a symbolic
replacement of the reams of paper used during the Assembly.
Co-Moderator Buckley told those attending the tree-planting that there
is a deeper symbolism than the replacement of the trees used to make paper.
"The branches of the tree represent the presbyteries who have come together
for this Assembly which is represented by the trunk," he told the audience.
"The tree's roots represent our faith." Following his remarks, the
co-moderators planted the tree and the gathered YADs shoveled soil around
the tree, completing the traditional ceremony.
