Mission Budget Passed on to General Assembly
by Dee Wade
SYRACUSE--After a morning and most of an afternoon of information
gathering, the Assembly Mission Budgets Committee voted to recommend to the
General Assembly that it approve the church's overall mission budget for
the years 1998 and 1999.
In 1998, the budget total is proposed to be $116,532.644. In 1999, the
total for General Assembly Mission is expected to be $117, 442.180. In
both years, the major program expense will come from the Worldwide
Ministries Division, budget at $41,896,617 per year.
These budgets reflect a "leveling off" of recent decreases in income
projections, according to Nagy Tawfik, who testified at length before the
committee. Mr. Tawfik, who is vice president and controller for the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), a Corporation, was cautiously optimistic
about the future of funding for the various programs of the General
Assembly. One hopeful sign given was the fact that in 1996, shared mission
support from congregations and presbyteries exceed expectations. The
Assembly Committee on Mission Budgets therefore included in its
deliberations "gratitude to God for abundant gifts" and described its
motion as a "step of faith," inviting "response by the church to this
challenge."
After recommending approval of the 1998 and 1999 mission budgets, the
Assembly committee heard from representatives of the various program
divisions of the General Assembly: National Ministries, Congregational
Ministries, and Worldwide Ministries, each representative sharing the
vision of the future for his or her area of work.
