Evangelism Priorities Addressed
By Jane Hines
SYRACUSE--A rousing reflection by vice-moderator, Jim Miller, energized the
Assembly Committee of Evangelism as they began their work. "If you were to
take evangelism out of the New Testament, you would have no New Testament"
said Miller. With this setting for their deliberations, moderator
Elizabeth Lunz led them into the agenda for the day.
The absolute priority of evangelism was evident as speakers and
advocates from the National and Worldwide ministry divisions, Racial Ethnic
caucuses, media specialists, and laity and clergy from churches brought
their concerns and resolutions to the committee.
The committee received an update on the national media campaign, "Stop
in and Find Out" and asked that the possibility of TV ads be explored in
addition to the work in progress.
They received reports on the work of the new church development and
redevelopment areas requested by last year's Assembly and approved the
extension of the Urban Ministries Task Force as it continues its work.
Questions of long range planning, financial implications and cultural
sensitivity were lifted up as the committee began to deal with the
overtures before it. Recommendations to the General Assembly will focus
on the formation of a Korean American coordinating committee, encouraging
nesting relationships with existing churches for racial ethnic ministries
and facilitating the establishment of evangelism as the priority for the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
The committee worked diligently and tirelessly under Lunz's and
Miller's able moderatorial direction. Work will continue as a
sub-committee bring recommendations on the Presbyterian Investment and Loan
Program, Inc. minutes and meets with the Mission Program Committee to
consider the proposal to establish a Division of Evangelism for the church.
