SYRACUSE--The Assembly Committee on the Presbyterian Foundation and
Publishing Corporation has voted to recommend the reelection of Foundation
President Larry D. Carr in response to the recommendations of the
Foundation Board of Trustees and the General Assembly Council.

The vote of the Trustees was unanimous; the GAC vote was 71 to 15; and
the Assembly committee voted 35 to 3 to concur with the trustees and 33 to
4 to concur with the G.A.C.

The Assembly committee spent the day on Monday, June 16, hearing
stories and statistics bearing witness to the dedicated work of the
Foundation in managing and increasing dramatically the financial resources
that are available for the mission work of the denomination. Then they
heard the impressive story of how the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation
has survived and thrived after being in business without denominational
subsidy since January of l994. PPC Board Chair Price Gwynn told the story
of how they have done what was necessary to survive as a business while
modeling a Christian management style. "The scorecard says that the
ministry of the printed word has been saved but we've done some dumb
things," he said.

A question about the relationship of PPC to the PREM curriculum
publishing efforts in the Congregational Ministries Division was raised by
Rosemary Banta, elder commissioner from Memphis Presbytery. Davis Perkins,
PPC president and publisher, assured the committee that efforts are being
made to promote cooperation rather than competition. Perkins told of the
ways in which PPC is donating staff time and resources to other
denominational projects and ideas. "In fact," he said, "new winds of
cooperation are flowing throughout the church at several levels."

Earlier in the day, the moderator and stated clerk of San Juan
Presbytery reported on a new covenant between the presbytery and the
Foundation, as he spoke in favor of confirming the reelection of Carr.
