Storytelling Awards Highlight Native American Celebration

                        by Midge Mack

SYRACUSE--John Calvin wasn't there, but Calvin John was. A member of the
Allegheny nation, John seems to know everything about the role Native
Americans play in the history, government, and community of upstate New
York.

While dinner guests of the Native American Consulting Committee ate,
Calvin traced aspects of this history and later introduced various members
of the Six Nations in the area.

Receiving elegant quilted satin blankets in gratitude for their
contributions to the Native American caucus were Sallie Cuaresma, its first
moderator; Jean Cutler, associate for Mission Participation, Women's
Ministries, National Mission Division; Jovelino Ramos, associate for
Social Justice, also Racial Ethnic Ministries, in the National Missions
Division, and Martha Ashley, executive administrative assistant for the
Synod of the Southwest. Other guests received one of more than a dozen
gifts.

Perry Ground, an Iroquois storyteller from the Syracuse area, was the
final speaker. The program was attended by more than 100 persons.
