                       Renewal Group Prays for Assembly

                              by Jane Hines

SYRACUSE--Embracing a vision of a denomination that puts its roots down
deep and reaches out through many branches into the sky, the Presbyterian
Renewal Ministries International gathered to pray for the 209th General
Assembly on Tuesday, June 17, at Plymouth Congregational Church on Onandaga
Street in Syracuse.

The group that filled the sanctuary of the church was there "with the
expectation that the Holy Spirit is going to move in our midst." They
expressed a belief that the church will be renewed through prayer as
Presbyterians are able to catch a vision from God and then move out into
that vision around the world in the kind of renewal that doesn't simply
fill pews and raise budgets, but "mobilizes the Church for evangelism,
using the Six Great Ends of the Church."

A sermon told the dramatic history of how the founding fathers of the
Presbyterian Church in Scotland forged the denomination "in the fire of
prophecy."

Urgent prayers were offered for the work of the church and everyone
involved in it, for those who have encountered difficult situations at the
Assembly and for those who will go back home to troubling times. As they
prepared to close their service in prayer, they asked, "When did the Church
outgrow its need for God?"
