Bell-Mackay Prize Awarded to Medical Missionaries
by Midge Mack
SYRACUSE-- Dr. David & Mary Seel, 1997 Bell-Mackay recipients, were
introduced by a long-time friend, Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick, at the
annual General Assembly Breakfast of Presbyterians for Renewal (PFR).
The award was established ten years ago by PFR to honor former
moderators of northern and southern streams of the denomination, Dr. John
Mackay and Dr. L. Nelson Bell. The Seels received recognition of their 37
years of service as medical missionaries in Korea.
Dr. Seel told the group of his ministry in Korea, "a country where
form often supersedes substance." His work was centered at the
Presbyterian Medical Center, locally named "the Jesus hospital," where the
entire staff is Christian and patient-evangelization is common. Seel's
specialty was cancer, with primary focus on tumors of the head and neck.
Mary Seel thanked the church for its continuing support of their work
and reported that 18 former patients of the hospital are now among the 300
Christian missionaries in Korea. Since retirement seven years ago, the
couple now resides at Montreat, N.C.
Guest speakers at the breakfast event were Dr. Louis & Colleen Evans,
from Menlo Park (Calif.) Presbyterian Church.
Another PFR award, a seminary scholarship for a woman working toward
ordained ministry, from the Lydia Fund, was given to Trudy Dumont, a Fuller
seminarian currently involved in producing a video for the seminary's 50th
anniversary.
