Older Adults Enjoy Beauties of Autumn
by Midge Mack
SYRACUSE-- "These are precious days," former General Assembly vice
moderator Herb Meza reminded the older adults who came to a tenth annual
breakfast of the Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network (POAMN) Tuesday
morning.
With "The Autumn of Our Content" for a title, Meza spoke of the season
as "the authentic season, the vital season when nature creates true
beauty."
"Spring is too reckless and immature," he continued. "Everyone tries to
'get away' from summer; winter brings life to a standstill."
He went on to list dozens of well-known persons in all fields of human
endeavor who had achieved their greatness and done their finest work well
after the age of 60 and cited Helen Hayes who once said life was
"preparation for a debut." Said Meza, "let's all be debutantes."
Earlier in the gathering director Eunice Poethig brought greetings from
the Congregational Ministries Division of which Older Adult Ministry is a
part. She also announced the formation May 21 of a national association for
retired clergy, spouses and survivors for which 315 retirees from 89
presbyteries, 16 synods, 44 states, Canada and Japan were present in
Louisville. Officers and a nominating committee were elected, bylaws
adopted, an executive committee established and a May, 1998 date set for a
second convention.
Octogenarian John Rhea, a volunteer in the Louisville office of Older
Adult Ministry, and executive Miriam Dunson, updated activities of the
nationwide network, reminding all of the growing demographics of older
adults.
