Special Committee on Middle Governing Body
Relationships Schedules Open Hearings During General Assembly

                      by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Rev. Ed Albright, chair of the General Assembly's
Special Committee on Middle Governing Body Relationships, has announced
that the committee will conduct an open hearing during the upcoming General
Assembly in Syracuse, N.Y.

The open hearing will be June 18 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Hotel
Syracuse.

Albright said the committee is "seeking information and opinions from
individuals who want to contribute to the committee members' understanding
of the issues that lie before it."

The committee was created by last year's Assembly in response to
concerns by the Assembly's Quadrennial Committee on Review that widespread
breakdowns had occurred in the relationships between synods, presbyteries
and General Assembly agencies.

The committee, in consultation with synods, presbyteries and General
Assembly entities, has identified the following as its "initial tasks":

     * to explore ways to raise the level of trust and sense of belonging
with and among the middle governing bodies and with the General
Assembly as we seek to fulfill "The Great Ends of the Church"
     * to explore ways for middle governing bodies to empower, motivate,
and equip congregations for their role in fulfilling the mission of
       the whole church
     * to explore methods leading to better and more effective
       communication throughout the church
     * to explore ways middle governing bodies can work together to foster
the commitment of all constituencies with emphasis on the younger
       generation and racial/ethnic persons
     * to explore ways governing bodies can work together to facilitate
better training, care and nurture of staff and elected leaders
     * to explore ways for governing bodies to engage in theological
discourse, Bible study, prayer, meditation and other spiritual
       reflection.
