"Year of the Child" Overture Makes it Through Committee

                          by Dee Wade

Syracuse: Late Tuesday afternoon, the Assembly Committee on Mission
Program and Coordination somewhat narrowly passed a motion to recommend
Overture 97-59 to the full General Assembly. This overture, coming from
the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, would designate a "Year of the Child"
starting with the 211th General Assembly (1999), and would establish
programs responding to the special needs and gifts of children. Committee
discussion of this overture included concerns that the "Year of the Child"
would compete with a proposed emphasis on the "Great Ends of the Church"
covering six years, one for each "End" as set forth in the first chapter of
the Book of Order. Other commissioners saw no such competition, stating
that the Year of the Child would work well with the second of the Great
Ends, "the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of
God."
