Human Rights Update Approved
by Nancy Rodman
SYRACUSE--The 209th General Assembly Wednesday evening authorized the
Stated Clerk to distribute the "Human Rights Update 1996-97" with a
study/action guide to middle governing bodies and sessions and to note
Human Rights Day, December 10, 1997. The Assembly encourages governing
bodies and individuals to pray for all victims of human rights abuse and
for those who persecute them and to seek ways of acting on behalf of these
victims.
The "Human Rights Update" is a yearly update that lifts up many human
rights concerns brought to the Assembly's attention by partner churches
around the world. The 1996-97 update has a new structure based on five
types of national and global human rights concerns: civil rights,
political rights, economic rights, social and cultural rights, and
religious rights.
Assembly Committee Moderator Margaret Elliott explained to the Assembly
that references to Malawi were deleted by the Committee on the advice of
Overseas Advisory Delegate James Cairns, a member of the committee, who has
recently returned from Malawi.
