Assembly Calls for Prayer Day for the Persecuted
by Nancy Rodman
SYRACUSE--In a resolution crafted to relate to persons of all faiths, the
209th General Assembly Wednesday evening called Presbyterians to corporate
and individual prayer for those who suffer persecution for the practice of
their faith by naming the Sunday before Epiphany an annual Day of Prayer
for Those Persecuted for Their Faith.
The Assembly called on the U.S. Department of State to give special
attention to means by which the government can act to provide relief in
cases of religious persecution worldwide. It urged caution in the use of
economic sanctions in the pursuit of the recognition of religious liberty
as a universally recognized human right. The Assembly calls on the State
Department to support the work of the United Nations in its monitoring
efforts and to strengthen the asylum system to provide access to those
fleeing religious persecution.
It reaffirmed the commitment of the 199th Assembly (1987) to partner
churches in areas of major Muslim populations, supporting their quest for
full religious freedom to witness to their faith.
