Assembly Responds to Stewardship and Funding
                   Report in Two Actions

                      by Lee Beckhusen

SYRACUSE--The Committee on Stewardship and Mission Funding gained the
appreciation of General Assembly commissioners late Wednesday afternoon
when it brought a brief report to the Assembly floor.

In approving the consent agenda, the Assembly approved two items
encouraging pay up on Bicentennial Fund pledges, the incorporation of a
summary of receipts for 1996 for special offerings in the minutes of the
current Assembly, and the final response to three other referrals.

In responding to overture 97-57 and communications 97-19 and 97-31
concerning the establishment of a special church wide offering to support
evangelism and church development, the Assembly supported the
recommendation of the committee that the matter be referred to the GAC's
Church Growth Mission Strategy Workgroup for report to the 1998 General
Assembly. The referral was made with the comment that while there was full
support for evangelism and church development within the committee, the
decision to initiate a special offering must be made as a part of ongoing
strategy. The report was completed with thanks for efficient work from
Moderator Patricia Brown.
