               Overtures 97:10, 58, and 60 Approved
                     in Global Mission Report

                        by Midge Mack

SYRACUSE--When commissioners returned to the report from the Assembly
Committee on Global Service, Witness and Mission Thursday evening, they
deleted funding for sending copies of the Resolution on the Middle East to
all congregations. However, those who wish to study it may order copies
from the Worldwide Ministries Division.

The report, including acceptance of 1997 overtures 10, 58 and 60, was
then approved as presented.

Overture 10 asked for a more urgent appeal to congregations to fund food
aid for North Korea through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. A special
mailing has already been sent. Overture 58 seeks more adequate U.S. funding
for comprehensive family planning programs in developing nations.

With approval of Overture 60 the PCUSA will invite its counterpart
Presbyterian Churches in Brazil and South Korea to join it in a three way
dialogue on social justice and the emerging global economy.

The approved report also calls for a special Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance (PDA) appeal to all congregations to fund church rebuilding in
the flood-stricken Red River Valley (Commissioners' Resolution 97-8), and
asks that subsequent PDA appeals for U.S. diasters include information on
the extent of church damage. Prior PDA policy has limited relief funding to
people, not buildings.
