Youngil Cho and Frank Diaz: Impressions of the Last Year
Syracuse-- The Rev. Frank Diaz and Elder Youngil Cho have, as a team
and individually, spent the last year playing a major role in the
national life of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Many observers
have credited these men with exercising exemplary leadership which
has done much to heal divisions within the church as a whole.
Even though their schedule during the meeting of the 209th
General Assembly (1997) was packed tight with appointments and
duties, they took time to respond to this question: " How did the
past year go for you?" They decided to respond as a team, just as
they displayed such teamwork in other matters.
This is what they wrote:
"Last year (June, 1996 - June, 1997) was a year of change:
-- the 208th General Assembly (1996) did not confirm the
reelection of the General Assembly Council (GAC) Executive Director,
Jim Brown;
-- Frank Diaz was appointed as the GAC interim director;
-- Youngil Cho began his term as the new GAC chair;
-- as a result of action by the 208th General Assembly, a new
enlarged GAC came into being;
-- changes have taken place in the GAC staff organization.
The Bible reminds us that change is a part of life: For
everything there is a season.
For GAC, the changes this year proved to be positive. Many of
the controversies of the previous year were put behind us. The new
emphasis on a Christ-centered direction, positive attitudes, and a
new servanthood approach at the Presbyterian Center have changed the
perception of the church at large in a positive way.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is now poised to enter into the
next millennium with a Christ-centered vision. Emphasis on the Six
Great Ends of the Church will help us to keep our focus.
For such a time as this, we were called by God Almighty. May
God be as generous in this coming year. We give honor and glory to
God for a year very blessed."
