United Methodist to lead
committee on Palestine

               by United Methodist News Service

A retired United Methodist seminary professor has been
elected chairman of the coordinating committee for nongovernmental
organizations (NGOs) associated with the United Nations on the
question of Palestine.
The Rev. David Graybeal of Madison, N.J., former professor of
church and society at The Theological School, Drew University,
will now lead the North American Coordinating Committee. He
represents the Methodist Federation for Social Action (MFSA), an
independent network of United Methodists, on the committee.
After the June election, Graybeal replaced Larry Ekin, a
former United Methodist mission intern in Jerusalem and the West
Bank, who represented Pax World Service on the committee.
The North American Coordinating Committee serves as a
clearinghouse for 22 NGOS in North America that address the
Palestinian issue and are certified by the United Nations.
Dorris Warrell, a United Methodist mission intern who worked
outside of Jerusalem, has just finished serving as a committee
staff person under appointment of the United Methodist Board of
Global Ministries.
MFSA's work regarding Palestine is carried on by its
affiliate, the Middle East Network of United Methodists, which was
founded by the Rev. Jane Eesley of Chicago after her service as a
mission intern in Jerusalem. Cathy Miller of Lakewood, Ohio, is
the network's current chairwoman.
The network helped pass several resolutions regarding
Palestine at the 1996 United Methodist General Conference,
according to the Rev. George McClain, MFSA's executive director.
It also has sponsored a member -- Dianne Roe of Corning, N.Y. --
to serve on a Christian Peacemaker Team in Hebron, West Bank.
The Middle East Network will sponsor a peace pilgrimage to
the Holy Land Nov. 10-19. More information about the network or
the trip is available by calling the MFSA office at (718) 273-6372
or sending e-mail to gmcclain@igc.org.
