United Methodist Men celebrate
church's new men's commission

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (UMNS) -- United Methodist men -- 3,500 strong -- celebrated
the formation of a separate new Commission on United Methodist Men July 12
during the seventh International Congress of United Methodist Men here.
Held at Purdue University's Elliot Hall of Music, the celebration honored the
leadership of the new commission and recognized its roots as a former section
of the churchwide Board of Discipleship.
"The purpose of this new commission is to empower, enable and enlarge the
ministry of United Methodist Men in your local church," said Gilbert Hanke,
chairman of the National Association of Conference Presidents of United
Methodist Men.
Currently there are 9,000 chartered local men's groups in the denomination.
Men at the congress pledged financial support so that by the year 2001 the
commission might be totally self-supporting. A total of 710 cards returned
pledged $414,000 of support over four years.
Bishop Raymond H. Owen of the San Antonio Area, commission president, said
his vision for the new organization is mobilizing United Methodist Men for
ministry for Jesus Christ. He challenged members to conduct their personal
lives in a manner that so reflected the life of Jesus "to attract other men to
Christ."
The new top staff executive of the commission is the Rev. Joseph Harris.
