Zimbabwean bank donates annual scholarship
to students from Zimbabwe at Africa University

                 by United Methodist News Service

A bank in Zimbabwe will give an annual $30,000 scholarship to
a Zimbabwean student majoring in business administration at United
Methodist-related Africa University.
Beginning the 1997-98 academic year, the Stanbic Bank
Zimbabwe Limited will provide annual scholarships to
undergraduate students from Zimbabwe in Africa University's
faculty of management and administration.
According to Andra Stevens, university director of
information, the $30,000 gift will be presented to the institution
on July 4 and the bank plans to make a similar gift each year
until the year 2000.
Stevens said the donation is timely because the university
will launch its undergraduate program for 75 students in
accounting, marketing, economics and administration in August.
The undergraduate program is an expansion of the Faculty of
Management and Administration that began in January 1996.
"The response to our undergraduate offering has been quite
overwhelming," said Olukunle Iyanda, dean of the university's
management and administration program. Because of limited space,
the expansion program had to reject hundreds of students who
applied, he said. "We hope in the future we can expand our
facilities to offer places to more students."
On Sept. 1, the university will offer its master's of
business administration program on a part-time basis to students
in Mutare and the surrounding area. Officials expect the first
class of master's candidates to complete their studies in October.
Graduation exercises will be in December.
