'Passages' captures silver medal
in international radio competition

     An edition of "Passages," a radio series jointly produced by
United Methodist Communications (UMCom) and Presbyterian Media
Mission, recently took a silver world medal in the 1997 New York
International Radio Festival.
     "Lesley Inside Rwanda," a part of a four-edition 30-minute
radio program on Rwanda, received the second-place award in the
Religious Programs Category of the competition, held in June.
      The 1997 international competition attracted 1,362 entries
from 33 countries.  Each program was evaluated by panels of radio-
industry professionals from 50 organizations in the United States,
Canada, England, Scotland and New Zealand.
     "Passages," an audio journal in which people share their
stories of faith, suffering and hope, was evaluated on the basis
of immediacy, production values, quality of presentation, audio
quality, communication ability, entertainment value and service to
the community, according to Bill Wolfe of UMCom's radio ministries
unit.
     Wolfe added that UMCom is pleased that "the award recognized 
our attempts to look into the politics and personalities of Rwanda
through the eyes of a Scottish nurse."
