California media director to head
new annual conference service office
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A California clergyman has been elected
to head the office created here to enhance services the
denomination's communications agency provides to annual
conferences and local churches.
The Rev. L. Steve Horswill-Johnston, 37, director of video
production and media resources for the California-Pacific Annual
Conference, has been chosen associate general secretary heading
the new Conference Resourcing Team of United Methodist
Communications (UMCom). He will employ two people this fall to
assist with networking and administration.
A lifelong United Methodist, Johnston holds a bachelor of
science degree from San Diego State University and a master of
divinity degree from Claremont School of Theology. He also is a
member of the Religious Public Relations Council, the United
Methodist Association of Communicators and the National
Association of Broadcasters. He has received awards of excellence
and merit in video production/direction.
Elected by the 26-member Commission on Communications, the
governing body of United Methodist Communications, Johnston will
begin his duties in September.
The team, to be located at the agency's headquarters here,
will coordinate UMCom's services to annual conferences. It also
will contract out for additional specialized resources that
conferences may require. The team will include not only three
staff people in Nashville but also other agency staff and
representatives from the annual conferences.
According to the Rev. Judith Weidman, top executive at United
Methodist Communications, Johnston, "not only buys into our vision
for delivering services to the field, he says he had just such a
vision before we did."
Weidman said the Conference Resourcing Team is a "whole new
day for United Methodist Communications" and the agency is eager
"to get the team on board and the program launched."
